Vibeke Bratseth‘s PhD thesis looks at circulating microvesicles and prothrombotic activity in patients with diabetes.


  1. Coronary artery disease patients with type 2-diabetes have higher levels of circulating microvesicles if they also have albuminuria.
  2. Children with type 1-diabetes do not have increased levels of circulating microvesicles.
  3. Prothrombotic markers are not elevated in children with type 1-diabetes.

(1) Levels of circulating microvesicles are higher in coronary artery patients with type 2 diabetes and albuminuria than in patients without albuminuria. One year of exercise training does not seem to influence expression of circulation microvesicles in this patient group.

75 patients with combined type 2-diabetes and coronary artery disease were included in the study, of which 25 had albuminuria.

(2/3) Neither circulating microvesicles nor procoagulant activity are increased in children and adolescents with type 1-diabetes, compared to healthy children. Furthermore, levels are not correlated to cardiovascular risk factors.

Children with diabetes do however have elevated levels of tissue factor pathway inhibitor, probably reflecting increased endothelial activation. 314 children with diabetes and 120 controls were included in the study. The children were assessed two times with five years between assessments.
